Syn Free Healthy Extra B Waffles with Poached Egg & Bacon - Syn Free Waffles - Syn Free - Waffles - Bacon - Poached Egg - Slimming World - Healthy

Who doesn’t love waffles right?! They’re such a fun breakfast, you can top them with all number of yummy toppings, from healthy fruit to decadent syrups and chocolate, and they’re very easy to make. Waffles in their traditional form tend to be rather high in syns, however these Syn Free Healthy Extra B Waffles are the answer that all Slimming World-ers have been waiting for! You can see the recipe, and video for how they were made, by scrolling down to the end of this post.

I topped my delicious Syn Free Healthy Extra B Waffles with bacon (with the fat cut off) and a perfectly poached egg. The runny yolk of the egg made all the difference, and I have to say I was pretty proud of how well it turned out. The secret to a perfectly poached egg is adding vinegar to the water. In the past people have told me that the vinegar doesn’t make the difference, however having done it many times both with and without it I can confirm that it really does make a difference!

Although these Syn Free Healthy Extra B Waffles are made with a mix of egg, yogurt and oats, they don’t taste yogurt-y (if that makes sense?!?). I was worried that they would, I was also worried that the yogurt would somehow react strangely to the heat of the waffle maker but I needn’t have worried. They have a really mild taste, hence why you can really top them with anything you want, and cooked really evenly all over.

Finding the Perfect Waffle Maker…

I have previously made Syn Free Healthy Extra B Waffles using an oven waffle mould, which works fine but can lead to a bit of a dense waffle. I decided that it was time to invest in a proper waffle iron instead! I headed over to Amazon, home of all things useful, to look at my options.

I opted for the Home Waffle Iron by JM Posner (get it here

On Amazon you’re really spoiled for choice when it comes to waffle makers. You have ones that do the flipping for you (when you want to remove your waffles), you have ones which make your waffles into interesting shapes, you have machines with interchangeable plate to make everything from waffles and paninis to doughnuts! I ended up going for a simple traditional waffle maker, primarily on price (I’m not made of money over here!).

If you don’t want to spring for an electric waffle iron yet, you can always opt for a silicone waffle mould instead, which you bake in the oven to get the shape of a waffle. They do work well however I find you get a denser bake and personally prefer it with the waffle iron. You can find Silicone Waffle Moulds on Amazon here

Are Syn Free Healthy Extra B Waffles a Tweak?

I’m addressing this here before anyone asks, because these are NOT a tweak! I repeat…these are NOT a tweak! Slimming World themselves confirm that using your measured quantity of oats in a recipe like this, where they’re essentially used as flour, is NOT a tweak. The reason for this is because you are simply using your Healthy Extra B amount, therefore you are not in danger of overeating, and although they are being blitzed more finely than if you ate the oats normally, you are not changing the filling power of them by using them like this.

Tweaks are one of the things which cause the most amount of arguments on Slimming World. You can read my thoughts on them here, where I also explain more about what they are, but all you need to know for this recipe is that they are definitely on a tweak and it will not effect your weight loss eating your Healthy Extra B in this way. Syn Free Waffles with Poached Egg & Bacon - Syn Free Waffles - Syn Free - Waffles - Bacon - Poached Egg - Slimming World - Healthy

These waffles are sugar free and can be made gluten free by ensuring you use oats that are specified as such (some oats are made in the same factor as flour and are therefore contaminated). This means that not only is this a great recipe for those on Slimming World, but it’s also perfect for anyone cutting down on sugar generally or looking for gluten free alternatives to traditional recipes. Syn Free Waffles with Poached Egg & Bacon - Syn Free Waffles - Syn Free - Waffles - Bacon - Poached Egg - Slimming World - Healthy

Instructions

  1. Turn on your waffle iron to heat up/preheat your oven to 180 degrees.
  2. Pulse the oats in the food processor until you have a rough flour like texture. If grinding by hand use a pestle and mortar or your fingers to grind the oats up.
  3. Blend the yogurt and egg with the oats and season with salt & pepper.
  4. Pour into your waffle iron, spraying it with Fry Light if needed, and close the lid until the waffles are brown on both sides.
  5. If using a Silicone Waffle Mould, bake for 15-20 minutes, or until browned on top.
  6. Top with your favourites, I used lean bacon and a perfectly poached egg!

Thank you Lindsay! I love being able to make recipes that can be easily adapted to be gluten free. I am not gluten intolerant so I don't need to use gluten free oats but it's great to know that people can do with just that simple change!

I love waffles but have never added an egg on top. Usually I go the sweet route. But I am intrigued as to how this tastes. Love this way to start your day. Breakfast of champions!

Thanks Ali! If you make them savoury, without lots of sugar in them, the egg and bacon on top works so well!
