From Flabby to Fit…A New Kind of Journey

Anyone who reads my blog regularly, or even occasionally, will know that I’ve been loosing weight with Slimming World since July 2015. Since starting I’ve lost 3.5 stone (that’s 49llbs but whatevs…!!!!), and my entire life has changed more than I could ever have dreamed. It’s been a hugely eye opening experience, and I’ve learnt a lot about myself and exactly how much I’m actually capable of!

I’ve lost a lot of weight and have begun to love my body, I no longer have rolls of back fat and my tummy doesn’t stick out further than my boobs, but there are some new insecurities which have crept in. Namely saggy bits. Don’t get me wrong, lots of people have this problem so much worse than I do, but each of us has our own view of our body. So, in an effort to try and combat the appearance of these new wobbly bits and help boost my weight loss as it starts to plateau, I have decided to become a ‘gym bunny’!

My body has changed a lot, and it’s now time to tone up, build muscle and trim down!

I first got back into the gym in January of this year, but it was a short lived affair whilst I was in between jobs, and when I was back to work died a very pathetic death. That was until a new Pure Gym opened up in Oxford, two in fact, and I no longer had an excuse to avoid the gym…it’s £14.99 a month after all!

For the last three weeks I’ve been going pretty regularly, building up my confidence bit by bit and learning how to use their new snazzy machines…I genuinely couldn’t walk for a few days after discovering the Hip Abductor and Adductor and overusing them during one particularly intense two hour session! It’s been painful but in a good way, and I can already feel my body changing!

Last night I had a session with one of the Personal Trainers in Pure Gym! It was more of a ‘get to know you’ session and a chance for Reza, my new PT, to understand my levels of strength and fitness, but at the end I decided to sign up to some proper sessions with him. I’m going to start off with a session once ever two weeks (I’m not made of money after all) which will serve as chances to learn new things and push my boundaries and limits, and Reza is going to give me a program to follow in between these.

I know that exercise is a new thing for a lot of other Slimming World-ers like me, so in an effort to help myself and anyone reading, I’ve therefore decided to start tracking this particular part of my journey on here. This goes hand in hand with the eating part of Slimming World, and will hopefully help take me from flabby to fit in no time! What it boils down to is that eating lean meat and counting my syns won’t help tone me up, and drinking plenty of water doesn’t build muscle on its own, so to get the body that I want at the end of all of this, I need to exercise as well. More importantly I need to exercise in the right way!

I’m planning to post everything from my work outs themselves to updates on my progress, what gym clothes I’m really loving and who knows maybe even the odd video (!!!) to try and help anyone who is unsure of where to go in terms of fitness. I am by no means an expert, although I’m going to be getting expert help, and I’m about as unfit as they come. This will therefore be an interesting (and probably pretty relatable) new adventure… wish me luck!

I’m also considering buying a FitBit at the moment, so if you’re thinking about it too here’s a link to a reasonably priced one on Amazon!

Congratulations on your achievements Cliona - that's amazing! I have recently taken up running in an attempt to get fit and lose all those 'recipe testing' pounds that have crept on since I started my blog! And I totally love it - I haven't actually lost any weight yet, but I've lost about 3 inches round my waist - amazing! Good luck with your new blog section :-) Eb x

Thank you so much Eb! I know what you mean about the recipe testing pounds, before I started down a healthy route I'd pretend that they didn't count because they were effectively work! That sounds like a huge achievement though, 3 inches is loads from around your waist :) Well done, and thanks for the encouragement x
